A very special and nice place where you get the perfect combination of the local experience and a high level of comfort. Easy to feel that the people behind are really passionate and I like the fact that the operation is very committed to the local community. I highly recommend this boutique hotel!
A beautifully built boutique hotel using local woods and traditional craftsman. As with any hotel it is the staff that make the difference. Very accommodating and they did their utmost to ensure a pleasant stay for my family.

…From the moment we landed on the island we were greeted with coconut drinks, fresh leis, and love music from the staff. They made sure to take care of every detail for us during our stay. The entire staff was so friendly, personable, and always available to help…
Having stayed at and visited other Island Luxury properties, I am as excited about visiting this one as any!! It looks AMAZING– and I am certain will be of its standard, premier service, decor, and food!!
It was our second visit with our family. Beautiful, quiet and serene hotel! All the staff – from the hotel manager, chefs, housekeepers and all staff including the excursion captions and his colleagues made us feel at home! The dolphin watching cruise, innafushi island trip, Etc did not disappoint! The kids have been planning for another come back!
If you’re like me and thought the Maldives was only for hyper expensive, overwater bungalows costing thousands per night, then you’re in for a treat. Island Luxury Hotel is a small, locally-run boutique hotel on Fuhlhadoo Island, which is a small, out-of-the-way island not on the tourist track.
We had a great and very peacefull time in the hotel. We had a welcome at the airport thanks to Rayya. The hotel is beautiful, most of the furniture is made out of solid wood. The chef Janith serves best-class, very delicious meals. The food is not only tasty but also very esthetic. The atmosphare in the hotel is very nice thanks to the staff. The Island is very quite apart from the time of the payers.
Beautiful cozy budget hotel with sea and palm tree views. The island is beautiful. The staff is excellent, friendly. Eda is good. We did everything we had to do, no matter what, we didn’t have to make us feel comfortable. Thanks to all the staff.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Manta Season 2026
Manta season in the Maldives runs from June through October each year. At Island Luxury Retreat Maalhos in Baa Atoll, the 2026 manta season package is available from June through October, with peak viewing from July to September when the largest aggregations of manta rays gather at Hanifaru Bay.
The premier manta ray viewing site in Baa Atoll is Hanifaru Bay — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protected bay where ocean currents concentrate plankton blooms, attracting hundreds of manta rays during feeding season. Island Luxury Retreat Maalhos is located just 20 to 30 minutes by boat from Hanifaru Bay, making it one of the closest and most convenient bases for manta watching in the entire atoll.
No. Hanifaru Bay is a snorkel-only site. Diving is not permitted inside the bay in order to protect the marine life and minimize disturbance to the manta rays. As long as you can swim and are comfortable with a mask and snorkel, you can experience the full manta encounter. Life jackets are provided for all guests, and our guides ensure everyone — from beginners to experienced snorkelers — has a safe and memorable time in the water.
Yes. The guided manta watching excursion to Hanifaru Bay is included with the Manta Season 2026 package at Island Luxury Retreat Maalhos. It is not an add-on or optional extra. All snorkeling equipment — mask, snorkel, fins, and life jacket — is also provided.
During peak season from July to September, it is common to see dozens to hundreds of manta rays in a single session at Hanifaru Bay. Sightings of 50 to 200 or more mantas have been regularly reported during peak months. While specific numbers cannot be guaranteed — these are wild animals in their natural environment — manta sightings during the season are extremely reliable, and most guests experience multiple encounters on each excursion.
Whale sharks frequently visit Baa Atoll during manta season, particularly in August and September. They are attracted to the same plankton blooms as the manta rays and are often encountered on the same excursion. While sightings cannot be guaranteed, our guides know the waters of Baa Atoll well and will always work to maximize your chances of encountering both species during your stay.
A typical manta watching excursion lasts 3 to 4 hours in total, including boat travel to and from Hanifaru Bay. Time in the water is approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on conditions and regulations, with multiple water entries possible if conditions allow. Excursions usually depart mid-morning to catch optimal feeding times. The rest of your day is completely free to enjoy your villa, the house reef, the island, and the pool.
Yes. Children aged 6 and above who are comfortable in the water are welcome on manta watching excursions. Life jackets are provided for all guests, and our guides are experienced in working with families of all ages. Manta rays are completely harmless — they have no stinger and feed only on tiny plankton. The Family Beach Villa with Private Pool and Family Sea-View Room with Jacuzzi at Island Luxury Retreat Maalhos are both ideal for families traveling during manta season.
Absolutely. Manta rays are entirely harmless to humans. They have no stinger, pose no threat whatsoever, and feed exclusively on tiny plankton. They are naturally gentle and curious animals that often approach snorkelers closely of their own accord. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve regulations require guests to maintain a minimum distance of 3 metres from the rays — though the mantas themselves frequently come much closer on their own terms.
We recommend bringing reef-safe sunscreen — chemical sunscreens are harmful to coral reefs and are not permitted within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A rash guard or light wetsuit for sun protection, an underwater camera or GoPro, a waterproof phone case, and a hat for the boat journey are also recommended. All snorkeling equipment, life jackets, and towels are provided by Island Luxury Retreat Maalhos.
Manta season coincides with the southwest monsoon, which can occasionally bring brief rain showers and wind. Light rain does not prevent excursions from going ahead. Our experienced guides monitor conditions closely and only postpone trips if guest safety is genuinely at risk. If an excursion is postponed due to weather, it will be rescheduled for another day during your stay. This is one of the key reasons we recommend a minimum stay of 5 to 7 nights — to allow full flexibility across multiple excursion opportunities.
We recommend a minimum of 5 to 7 nights at Island Luxury Retreat Maalhos during manta season. This allows for multiple manta excursions, flexibility if weather temporarily affects conditions, time to explore the exceptional house reef and other Baa Atoll activities, and the kind of unhurried, restorative pace that makes a manta season stay truly memorable.
Hanifaru Bay is a small, funnel-shaped bay within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll. During the southwest monsoon, ocean currents funnel plankton blooms directly into this protected bay, creating one of the richest and most consistent manta ray feeding grounds anywhere on earth. Strict conservation regulations — including a maximum of 80 visitors at any one time and snorkel-only access — protect the site and ensure the experience remains genuine, responsible, and extraordinary.
Yes — fully. Island Luxury Retreat Maalhos works exclusively with licensed operators who operate in complete compliance with UNESCO Biosphere Reserve regulations. These include a maximum of 80 visitors in Hanifaru Bay at one time, snorkel-only access, a 3-metre minimum distance from all marine life, reef-safe practices, no touching or chasing of any marine animals, and small carefully managed group sizes. Responsible tourism at Hanifaru Bay directly supports the conservation of the site and the long-term protection of Baa Atoll’s extraordinary marine ecosystem.
Island Luxury Retreat Maalhos offers private beach pool villas on a genuine local Maldivian island — combining boutique luxury with authentic community character. Compared to a large private island resort, Maalhos offers significantly closer proximity to Hanifaru Bay, a more personal and flexible service experience, a naturally alcohol-free halal-friendly environment, the freedom to explore a real Maldivian island, and direct booking with the team who actually runs your stay — with no third-party markups.
There are two transfer options:
Option 1 — Domestic Flight and Speedboat: Fly from Velana International Airport in Malé to Dharavandhoo Airport in Baa Atoll (approximately 25 minutes), followed by a 15-minute speedboat transfer to Maalhos island. This is the fastest and most comfortable option.
Option 2 — Speedboat from Malé: A direct speedboat from Malé to Maalhos takes approximately 2 hours. A scenic and popular option for guests who enjoy traveling by sea.
The Island Luxury team coordinates all transfers. Simply share your arrival details at the time of booking and everything is arranged for you.
Book directly with the Island Luxury team for the best available rates and fully personalized service. Peak months — particularly July and August — fill up months in advance. Early booking is strongly recommended.
